Winter Gloves

What gloves do you wear trail running in the winter?

Do you wear just any gloves or some kind of true winter running glove?

I always find that basic gloves when it comes to trail running tend to not work as well, especially when we are in the dead of winter and we have really cold winds and weather.

I prefer something that is much thicker and I know will keep my hands warm when trail running, so winter running gloves are my go-to.

I think thicker but tighter if possible.

Although, I’ve heard a lot of good from people using mittens!

Standard exercise gloves definitely won't be of any use to you—your hands will still freeze. I’d recommend thermal gloves instead; that way, you can maintain your body temperature.

Thermal gloves would be ideal.

The fingers are a lot easier to freeze than practically anything else, except maybe the toes.

You’d want as much warmth as you can get around your fingers.

Yes, they’re perfect. I have thermal gloves, as well as a thermal top and bottoms. This way—whether I go out for a run or not—I avoid freezing in the middle of winter when it’s extremely cold. I highly recommend them; even if you don’t go running in the winter, they’re still great for keeping you from freezing.

It is always Thermal gloves for me.Since thst are personal protective equipment designed to protect hands from extreme temperatures, especially cold. They do a better job in the winter.

And, well, they’re for winter—why would you wear thermal gloves at any other time? That would be really stupid; thermal gloves are clearly only for winter. 😂😂😂😂

Fortunately, we do not have winter over here, so I have never really had to worry about gloves. Yes, we have had extreme cold weather before, but I still don't really have to worry about gloves.

I don’t understand—is there no winter in your country? Does the temperature never drop at any point during the year? What is the season usually like in your country, and what are the temperatures?

We officially have just two seasons in my country which is the dry and wet season. During the wet season it pretty much rains a lot and sometimes, almost every day. During this season the weather is usually cold but with recent climate change and all, there are days where the weather is still hot and it's raining. Then during mid November or early December which is part of our dry season, we usually experience what we call harmattan. During this period the weather is extremely dry, the sun becomes hotter than usual but the cool part is that the mornings is Aldo extremely cold with the whole place literally covered with due but then again climate change so it's no longer as cold as it used to be.

Wow, I just found out about this—it really sucks that it’s like that, because it means you’re stuck having to endure the heat no matter what. And what you mentioned at the end—about the mornings being freezing cold and often snowy—that sounds absolutely wild to me; I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s as if it’s winter in the morning, but then by the afternoon or evening, it turns into extreme summer. So, what kind of temperatures do you usually get during these two extreme "seasons" you experience?

Lol, not really snowy, though, just a heavy amount of dew in the morning and sometimes it can be so heavy that you won't be able to see ahead of you. But due to climate change and all that, for a few years now we haven't experienced it this extreme. The last two years or so, there was literally no dew during this period. During the rainy season, the temperature is actually normal, the only difference is that rain could fall at any time. There are times where we could experience rain for seven days straight with just very little breaks. This is actually what makes the weather cold during this period, but there are days where the sun still shines bright that you won't even remember it's the rainy season. Though 95% of the time when we experience that extreme hot sun, it usually rains afterwards. As for our dry season, we still experience rainfall but not like the rainy season. Then that hamattan period, you could wash a dress in the morning and before afternoon, it's already dried. That's how dry the weather can be. Sometimes during this period the sun is extremely hot, while it blows dry wind around 😂 our weather is definitely a case study for those who aren't used to it.

I believe also that waterproof gloves isn't a bad idea for winter trail running. It is a good protective gear for the hands in bad weather and in cold while running. The bottom line is that we just need good running gloves as a barrier to protect our hands from bad cold, wind, or rain, keeping us warm and comfortable during our run.
